Dumbfries or Dumfries if you're going with the real spelling

yes - that's correct -it all came about because I took a call from someone who mispronounced the word and when I mentioned to someone who comes from there she said stupid chips andwe both started to laugh

This reminds me of a poster I've got by Martin Hanford (who does the 'Where's Wally?' books).
It's a map of Britain and Ireland but the places are illustrated in a comical fashion. Some of them are pictures of associated characters (e.g. Nottingham - Robin Hood, Tintagel - King Arthur) and others take the name literally:
Reading - people reading books
Looe - a toilet
Bath - a bathtub
Runcorn - ears of corn with legs, running
Barrow in Furness - people putting a wheelbarrow into a furnace
Dungeness - a letter 'S' in a dungeon
Coleraine - beople being hit by falling coal
Cork - a cork
And Dumfries is stupid chips!
Unfortunately, the number of ways of doing something wrong far exceed the number of ways of doing it right. G. Kasparov
