Question setters

#1 Post by SparkOut » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:05 am

I've been asked to help provide the content (ie questions, but with a bit of a difference) for a Wine & Wisdom and I've got plenty of stuff together so far, but I'm looking to make it a bit more "puzzly" than just a case of "I know it / I have no idea".

I've been doing really well on the "bonus" and fill-in stuff, but can anyone help with some of the "round" questions? (There will be 10 rounds of 10 themed questions. There are also a lot of other materials left on the tables for people to fill in for bonus points on an ongoing basis, which will be collected shortly before the end of the quiz. These are the ones where there are much more puzzly stuff going on. It's much easier to make interesting things for this part of the W&W than the rounds, I'm finding, because making inventive questions without them being too "cryptic" and "tricky" and "puzzly" is hard... for me anyway.)

Any ideas? Whether for the "bonus" stuff or the "rounds" but especially the "rounds". Thanks anyone with *any* ideas at all.

I've got a set of initials to well known sayings eg MHMLW = Many Hands Make Light Work. There are 20 in my set. (I used some to create a part of a puzzle for the last meet. For these I used a number to index a letter to spell out a name). Would you like them?
There were also some questions of the what's next/missing in this series. But these aren't wine related. I assume you don't want it all related to wine?

Ages ago I did a quiz for the school my kids went to and I did one round "name the year" where I listed three famous events for each year picked.

Could you do a music round? The start of various songs/pieces of classical music to identify.

If you want to make it more puzzly could you make the rounds spell out letters of names of eg teachers if it's a school event. eg round two, second letters spell out a name. Though that could get complicated, especially by the time you get to the 10th round! Although if you had song/book titles by then it might be feasible.

Yes please, anything appreciated.
No, the questions have nothing to do with wine. Wine & Wisdom is the usual name (round here at least) for a "quiz night" usually for fundraising purposes, as opposed to a regular Pub Quiz.
I've got plenty of Pub Quiz type questions, but I've been asked to make it have "a bit of a difference" so although I'm happy with the "bonus" material sort of stuff, the "rounds" are a bit hard to make into a sort of puzzle without being too obscure for a few moments per round situation.
Music intros is already on the list 8-) All good ideas though, thanks!

I've been to hundreds of quiz nights. Some of my favourite activities were:

identify the crisp flavour (they had really odd ones like hedgehog as well as the usual things like sweet chilli - surprisingly difficult!!)

Name the monopoly places on a blanked out board.

Paper aeroplane flight competition - each team had to make a paper aeroplane and then one person from each team had to get up on the stage and see which one went the furthest.

Songs played backwards (don't know how they did this though).

Identify the musical instrument by the sound.

Match the font name to the font (again, more difficult than you might think).

Complete a paper model of the digestive system in the right places (paper stomach, duodenum, gall bladder, large / small intestine etc.)

Identify the British bird pictures.

Or how about a connections wall? :D I've got a good one Cenwulf sent me which I used at new year, which went down well.

If you're seriously stuck on normal questions / rounds, then my friend Sue has written loads of quiz nights. I'll ask her for some questions if you like. Let me know.

Yes I thought of the crisps one. We also once had to identify different cheeses.

How about capital cities that you have to name and then place in order North to South (or East to West)?

List the six counties of Northern Ireland so that their Initial letters spell out a 2 word phrase meaning 'Big Boy'?

Fermanagh
Antrim
Tyrone

Londonderry
Armagh
Down

Can you find another, shorter, word which means the same as the original word hidden in each of these “kangaroo words”?

Cartoon (Art)
Deceased (dead)
Exists (is)
Instructor (tutor)
Prosecute (sue)
Splinter (split)
Matches (mates)
Honourable (noble)
Isolated (sole)
Observe (see)

We've already got "siamese celebs" with people's faces cut and photoshopped onto the other half of someone else's face.
Sweets for identification, disguised as part of the complimentary snacks on the table.
Pictures of places which tie in geography / history / sport, etc matching with other pictures like flags, country outlines, etc.
Various word searches and generally lots of simple "puzzle" things, but all these are good thoughts and any more suggestions will be gratefully received.

Spoilsport - I was enjoying those

They're good in that most people will get some, a good few people would get most, but it's not so easy to get all (just from straightforward knowledge). I was doing well with the Food & Drink section until a couple of items I hadn't heard of.

I'm pretty sure the answer to the last question of Geography is "No!" :D .... and that's the only one I'm sure of [NOT my subject].

I'm doing a puzzle night for Brownies (and regretting it at the moment, considering how long it's taking to sort out), but I need another book to complete a set of questions. I'm doing 'identify the book by the characters'. I've done Harry Potter and Winnie the Pooh, but I need another book which 7-10yr old girls will recognise from 3 character names. Any ideas?
