I've never been to the Lake district either, although I have been to Scotland several times (being half Scottish!). But usually up the other side to get there so I don't think I've even been through the Lake district.

We went to Peebles for New year and it was lovely. One day maybe we'll go further.

I can recommend Loch Lomond- the scenery is lovely, and the drive along the A82 form Loch Lomond to Fort William is lovely

The thing with the Lake District is that people tend to think it's a place with lakes in it. Which of course it is, but the MOST impressive thing about it is the mountains. :D And yes, I quite agree with Tricia, Loch Lomond is beautiful. My favourite parts of Scotland are the Glens, in particular places like Glen Esk, but for absolute gobsmacking, breathtaking beauty, you have to visit Glencoe (brooding and terrifying doesn't touch it) and the Isle of Skye. The Cuillins are stunning.

No it isn't. A place with lakes in it. As everyone knows, there is only one "lake" in the Lake District. Everything else is a tarn or a water or something equally parochial. :)
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

 Yes, definitely. But let's not start a Harry Hill's TV Burp style FIGHT between the tin dog and the jester. Mind you, that would be amusing.

If you've not been back recently mbh, you would not recognise it from what it used to be. They now have a really magnificent store, all glass and streamlined floorspace (still next door to the railway station) - an absolute delight to wander round and wonder at the amazing things on display..... and a super cafe to relax in after doing your shopping :D. Quite a contrast to our local shop in Exeter which is very cramped. :o
I go to Windermere from time to time as our Church has a national conference centre there and it is always a dilemma when we have a free afternoon, whether to go down to the Lake, up to the mountains, or just to end up at Lakeland!
And yes, the Lake District is really beautiful, especially out to the western area which is much wilder and less "touristy" - although some of the passes are quite terrifying!

OK all you technical computery people. If someone requests a laptop case for Christmas do they mean a thing like a briefcase or a thing like a giant pencil case ("sleeve")?

I would ask the person requesting it, but she is in France, has had an eye operation and is banned from looking at the screen, so is unlikely to read her emails.

My guess would be something like a briefcase. Do you know what size she needs as they vary tremendously*. And if it is for a mini one like I have at work she might mean a pencil case type thing as they are very easy to put in another case for travelling but just need a bit of padding.

* But if you get one too big she can always put other stuff in there too if she is travelling with it. I've used one for my small office computer plus my wash things and reading matter on a flight once. Only one case to open at security if laptop and liquids are all in the same place.

You can also get laptop backpacks which are really good if the person walks about with it at all.

The computer is 15.6 inches apparently.

She has asked for a Union Jack one, which is why I am a bit hesitant of getting the wrong thing. She was born and brought up in France as a french speaker, but is pretty bilingual as her mum is English (My S-I-L) . She is studying in Belgium at university and clearly likes to celebrate her English genes. But does she want the whole campus to know, or just close friends? There are subtle ones in grey, but to me they aren't really union jacks (also in pink!)
