With any luck if you, being a tin dog, tried to chase me down a burrow, you'd get stuck.

For someone who apparently can't read small print, it's odd you could read that...

 Even I have enough brain cells to work out that if I press QUOTE then it enlarges it. I realise you think I'm dim, but I didn't realise you thought I was THAT dim.

Now you've all been enlightened to what letter boxing is you can see why I said geocaching is easy.

All you need for letter boxing is a map and compass and clues.

Geocaching using techno stuff that takes you right too it - just for wimps and those of a lazy disposition mentally.

Yes, I think you're right, Kathlyn. I would prefer the map and compass method.

To CL
Nope. I've ticked that one off already. And SOMEONE (mentioning no names) didn't get here. Our "game" even involved being sent to a pub to find a missing toad, armed with some money for a round...and cake at the end  Bet you wish you'd come, now?

Lots of clues and some letterboxes are even found in the pubs around Dartmoor :D

The original idea of letterboxes started on Dartmoor in the 1850s, when a famous Moorland Guide had the idea of leaving a container for visitors' cards to be left at the famous Cranmere Pool, one of the remotest locations on the Moor. He provided a special stamp and ink so that the visit could be recorded. This developed into people leaving a (pre-paid) postcard addressed to themselves in the box, which the next visitor undertook to take away with them to put in a post box. Hence the term "letterbox". Until the 1970's this only involved about a dozen remote locations on Dartmoor, not frequently visited, so you might well wait several weeks for your card to arrive!

I can vouch for the fact that back in the late 60's, when on one of our regular visits to my In-Laws in Devon, we went on an exploration and succeeded in finding Cranmere Pool - it is a wonderful location and not actually all that far off the beaten track! We did indeed find someone's postcard in the box, which we duly posted - and left our own, which we eventually received a little later :D

However, the idea of 'letterboxes' has recently been popularised and now there are thousands of them in all sorts of places - no longer anything to do with the original idea at all

I have the one from Cranmere Pool and over 200 others. All collected when we used to live in the area many years ago.
