Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
A few days ago I was sent an email saying that my email was being changed. It didn't seem to say I needed to do anything, then this morning I tried to check my emails and I got a strange screen, telling me I needed to download some programme because my email had been migrated. So I clicked the button and off it went. Now it tells me I have to configure my emails manually using POP IMAP and SMTP
I have no idea what it is talking about. I have written down the information it has given me for each of those three headings.
It gives me a server name, a port and an encryption code for each.
This is BT business broadband and outlook express is what the email thing usually says at the top.
HELP
Now i have got in and there is an email for me from them.

What? Where are my emails?UtilitiesEmail trouble shooting
No email account
The email Assistant has completed a search of your computer and has not been able to detect any BT email accounts, However if you use an alternate email service the problem could be caused by this account. Currently the email trouble shooter only supports BT email accounts.
If you have a BT email account and would like us to set up your email account in Microsoft Outlook Express, Outlook or Windows mail click the create account button below

What does that bit I've highlighted mean? I think I have downloaded the configuration thing, which was what gave me those three sets of setting that I mentioned above.
Hello,
We've now finished upgrading your mailbox and moved across any existing mail. Our new service means all your users get a bigger mailbox. And, you'll get the latest technology including better protection from spam and viruses.
If you send and receive emails using Microsoft Outlook, Windows Live Mail or any other email software, you'll need to change your account settings. You can do this using our email configuration tool, which you can download here.
If you check your email using Blackberry, iPhone or any other mobile or tablet device, you'll need to configure it manually. You can find out more information on this by visiting our FAQs.

I sent a PM
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
And spoke! Lovely to talk with you giraffe, hope everything works out OK, and remember, you don't need to change the way you do things if you don't want to.
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Thank you, you're a star!
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
I don't seem able to use outlook because it doesn't work with windows 7 apparently. It tells me to use windows live mail instead. So if I go in to that it then tells me to open an account with hotmail. Does that mean I can't use my old email address with that?
Looks like it will be simpler to carry on using the "standing in the middle of the post office waiting for deliveries" method.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Ignore me! I think it was just using hotmail as an example.
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Outlook is certainly compatible with Windows 7 - I suspect you "just don't have Outlook" as I believe you have also mentioned not being able to open MS Word documents - so you likely don't have any of the MS Office products installed.
Good news is that Windows Live Mail is perfectly fine for what you want to do (send and receive emails).
As you've already discovered, you can set up various "types" of account, and you can (and probably should) opt to "set up the email account manually" giving it the server settings from the BT info. If you set up the account as a pop3 type then remember that it will not synchronise mail with other machines that you use to view/send/receive email.
If you get any problems, or have any questions at all, just let me know.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
You're such a lovely helpful man, SparkOut, as are many people on this site. Where else would you get someone who writes you brilliant puzzles and spends hours making your own puzzles look great, someone who makes you a wonderful system to help you at work, and someone who happily gives expert advice on computer problems ALONGSIDE people who will invite you into their own homes / caravans and cater for you, or organise a mass visit to a play, or people who support you when you're down and having a shitty time, people who will go out of their way to find out information for you on ANY subject at the drop of a hat, who will help you to set up a puzzle hunt or even will write you puzzles for a New Year party?? It's actually incredible, and wonderful here.
I've lost count of the number of times I've found myself saying to someone "well, I don't know, but I bet I know SOMEONE who does!" I just wish I had a bit more to offer in return for all these fabulous, and generous things you all do for me. I shall have to invent a new skill. Let me see, what am I good at??
...
I may be some time thinking about the answer to that question...
Seriously, this is SO MUCH MORE than a forum about puzzles, isn't it? It's like having my own bank of clever and willing friends on tap who can turn their hands to almost anything between them, and who are prepared to help without ever expecting anything in return. And I just want to say to you all, thank you. You are WONDERFUL and I really appreciate you all.
PS I'll stop gushing now and go and get packed for my weekend away. Must locate the scary fluffy purple slippers...

Thank you spark out, you have been so helpful.
I do have word and excel now that I have the new laptop. That was a precondition of buying it! It makes life so much easier, until schools start sending emails with attachments labelled .pub! I found a page somewhere that said you can't have Outlook if you have Windows 7.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Whatever page that was is ... plain wrong! Outlook is compatible with Windows 7 in all it's versions that I know. Whether you want it on your computer or not is another matter. You certainly don't *need* it.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
This seems like a good place to put this idea….
The local community centre has a number of classes on during the day and evening, so I visited to check it out. There is nothing there ‘technology’ based, so I floated the idea of a group where people could bring their laptops along and learn how to use them better.
I was told the details of the lady who controls the diary, and talked to her yesterday. It seems that most classes cost £3.50 a shot and the room rental of the room best for this activity is a massive £6.00 per hour. [No – that’s not a typo – LOL]
Since I don’t know if there would be an audience, I’m thinking about a advert including a declaration of interest. Something on the lines of:
--------------------------------------------------
Laptop / Computer Sessions at Greenside Community Centre
Do you have a laptop computer and want to know more about how to use it? Have you had a computer passed to you and want to know how to start? Classes beginning soon if there is interest.
Wednesday – 7pm to 8:30pm
(Start Date to be arranged)
Please declare an interest below:
Name Contact No. I want to learn…..
[Sorry – no hardware fixes or virus removal – but I know people who can do this very well]
Queries to Chris Taylor – Taylor Made Solutions – 078?? ??? ???
--------------------------------------------------
Obviously I don’t expect to make a fortune from this, but the hope is it will catch other eyes and possibly bring some private work my way as well.
Thoughts??????

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Sounds like a good idea.
I think I would put a few examples of things people might like to learn. eg to get more out of word / excel / paint or explaining what all the little tabs and buttons do. If you mention a couple of things they might think of similar things that have always bothered them.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
MBH where was the button that makes things go transparent? ( In paint) I did a screen dump (I think that was what you called it) for mirror mirror and had to use very thin lines, because I couldn't work out how to make fatter lines see through. All my lines were perfectly horizontal, vertical and 45 degrees.

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Am I sensing a fair amount of pride in that statement, Giraffe????
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Yes, very proud that I remembered some of what I was taught a couple of weeks back. (I had a good teacher though.)
