Can't wait.
Re: The Stupid Clan.
Anyone fluent in Latin? We need a motto to go round the edge for the badge design, such as "Who needs sleep?" or "Silly o'clock club" or such. What do you all think of this as a prototype badge?

Nice badge. I've just e-mailed my daughter to see if she can suggest a translation. (she is studying French and Latin at Uni)
Re: The Stupid Clan.
Well this is her reply
'quis somno eget?' is 'who needs sleep?' but 'silly o'clock club' doesn't translate - Latin doesn't really have an equivalent of 'o'clock'... 'societas horae stultae' would probably be the closest but it's a bit too literal - 'society of the stupid hour'. Good luck in finding someone fluent in Latin - last I heard an old couple living in Pau were the only people in the world who spoke in Latin!!
what do you think folks?

Fernando speaks latin and I think his textbook's glossary at the back has 'blockhead' in it, which I assume is their equivalent of 'idiot'!

I like society of the stupid hour. Any new members want to back out now?

This is what I love about this forum. The most ridiculous suggestions are all considered with equal gravitas along with those more serious and dramatic problems of life.
I like the idea of 'society of the stupid hour'
Re: The Stupid Clan.
I vaguley know a few words but in class we translate text from Latin to English rather than composing our own Latin sentences. I would say that fluent in Latin was very OTT.kingsley wrote:Fernando speaks latin and I think his textbook's glossary at the back has 'blockhead' in it, which I assume is their equivalent of 'idiot'!
Re: The Stupid Clan.
I never said you were fluent. I just said that your textbook had a word which meant 'idiot' in case they wanted it!

Re: The Stupid Clan.
OK - hands up who wants a Latin Idiot?

Re: The Stupid Clan.
I thought I'd already won that particular category ("Scurra" being essentially the Latin for Fool - and nothing to do with squirrels as someone on here has previously suggested
)

Re: The Stupid Clan.
But that usage of Scurra is the "Jester" as the descriptive part of the name. (e.g. like the Yorkshire bit of Yorkshire Terrier meaning that the breed originated in Yorkshire, not that Yorkshire is a dog...)

That was an error. I hadn't heard the full conversation:Scurra wrote:I thought I'd already won that particular category ("Scurra" being essentially the Latin for Fool - and nothing to do with squirrels as someone on here has previously suggested)
*This is where I went out of the room.On the Other Site, Julian wrote:I'd just entered the Staff Room, reading a sheet of paper which I had found pinned to the notice board. It was probably from The Superego.
"What've you got there, Jules?" asked Sam.
"It appears to be an extract from a 'Da Vinci Detectives' story," I replied, and showed him the sheet."Are you feeling alright?" asked MBH, putting a hand on Rotas's shoulder.
"Just a slight cold," replied Rotas, then he sneezed and turned into Medved.
"Gesundheit."
"Spasibo"
"I think you'd better change back before Dreamworks see what's happened," said Looby.
Medved looked at MBH, who had turned into a panda.
"So, the 'Tec Rotas can not only change his own form, but can also affect anyone who's in contact with him."
"It seems that way," I replied, "but I don't quite know what to make of this pencilled bit at the bottom."Rotas Becomes Click - What Does Scurra Turn Into?
Sam considered this.
"I think he should become a red squirrel. Isn't 'scurris' Latin for 'squirrel'?"
"Don't know. Mr S!"
Rotas turned from talking with Xeno.
"What is it?"
"We want to know the derivation of the word 'squirrel'. Is it Latin?"
"I think it's Greek, actually." Rotas looked at Xeno.
"It's Greek - 'skia-uros' meaning 'shadow tail'."
"That seems right," said Rotas, "as in Latin it's 'sciuris'."
"See - I wasn't far off," said Sam. "Scurra becomes a squirrel." *
"Scurra?" exclaimed Rotas. "That's Latin for 'buffoon'."
"But is it derived from 'sciuris'?" asked Sam. "After all, 'ferret' comes from the French for 'thief'."
"Maybe it is," replied Rotas, "but I'd have to look it up to make sure."
Just then Fortuna entered.
"Where's Cenwulf off to in such a hurry?" she asked.
"Perhaps he's due on the 'Puzzlebrains' Forum," said Xeno.
We left it at that, and thought nothing of it at the time.
