I've been watching the show jumping team all afternoon and I think I've jumped every jump with them. What a result a fantastic Gold Medal

Do you ride horses, Kathlyn? Is that what inspired the avatar?

I used to. Sold my horse 11 yrs ago. Rode a fieinds horse for a couple of years after that then gave up as self preservation clicked in.

I find horses terrifying!! The thought of being at the mercy of a great big, pretty dumb animal, which can suddenly freak out at the sight of a plastic bag or something is NOT my cup of tea.

We're back from holiday and have been glued to the olympics. The coverage has been brilliant, with the red button alphabetical index thing really easy to use for finding all those sports that you usually miss. I'm really sad that I didn't manage to get any tickets in the ballot thingy, I would have loved to go. Never mind, 4 years to save up for a trip to Rio! Fernando was captivated by the dressage, he thought the horses were very clever. There was a bit of synchronised swimming in the pool at the villa, and a table tennis tournament too!

With the Closing Ceremony almost upon us, what will be your memories of London 2012? Here are a few of mine;

Fly-Mo: Farah does the long-distance double of 10,000m and 5,000m.

Lightning strikes twice: Usain Bolt retains his 100m and 200m titles.

Seven is Heaven: Jessica Ennis leads all the way to win the Heptathlon.

Sailing to Glory: Ben Ainslie proves that Britannia rules the waves.

Oarsome: British rowers top the medals table at Eton Dorney, with the women making their mark.

Wheels on Fire: Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, Victoria Pendleton, Laura Trott, etc. - Brits reign on Bikes.

Murray Mint: Andy Murray wins gold in the singles, and gets silver with Laura Robson as a wildcard mixed doubles entry.

Breaking the duck: some countries get their first ever medals - Grenada, Guatemala, Botswana and Cyprus.

The Roar of the Crowd: Brits cheer everyone regardless of whether they finish first or last, from a Niger rower to the first Saudi woman athlete.

Watching modern pentathlon at the moment, a horse has just gone over a jump with the rider underneath, clinging on to the underside of it's neck, having come off at the previous fence.

Watching closing ceremony at present. Started a bit slow but concert has started and it is definitely picking up.

It's not quite as bonkers as the opening ceremony, but they're certainly giving it a good go...
Shame the sound system isn't really quite up to the job, although presumably the problem was that they couldn't rehearse the show in the arena at all.

LOL - a wonderful image you paint there. I'm glad I spotted the word 'Modern' there or I'd wonder what the horses were doing there [but a quick curiosity check has now shown me that this event has been round for a hundred years.... What the Heck??? I always think running, jumping, and throwing]


As I texted to the BBC this morning, the games has totally passed me by without touching me. The BBC local radio I listen to has inevertably been talking about it so that is where I've heard "the news" - but I've got no time to watch ceremonies and no interest in the sport.

I'm glad for those that have enjoyed the event, but it meant nothing to me. I'll probably see the opening ceremony at some point in the future.... maybe.... I like a good 'variety' show.

Now I've got no doubt the radio will be switching to blather on about football again.

There was plenty of running jumping and throwing and that was just from the horseriding stage. Running after the horse after it had dumped the rider, horse throwing rider off / over the jump and some jumping of the fences, but many of the horses decided to plough straight through the obstacles. Quite hillarious viewing, they started off with 1200 points and lost 20 for every jump down, so how one rider managed to apparently end on -40 I'm not sure, but I think it was down to losing 100 points for each fence not attempted and the hose refused to jump almost any of the fences.

newspapers arriving late because an "important" athletic event was taking place
having extra titles to pack every night

and oh yes Yorkshire coming in in 11th place


and higher than London so take that Boris :-p

The closing ceremony was the only time the telly got switched on whilst away. I thought it verged on the ludicrous, personally...
