Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
OK clever computery people, I have a problem. We just changed our internet to Virgin media this afternoon, and now, for some unknown reason, I can only connect to it using a cable.
Any suggestions please?

I can only think that you forgot to sacrifice the chicken after dancing round the pentacle six times widdershins in the nude.
Can the computer actually "see" the router at all? i.e. if you take the cable away and use the Network and Sharing Centre to look for wireless networks, is your router visible? (Normally you will be able to see yours and about four others in neighbouring houses...)

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
All of my puzzles are simple and obvious. For certain values of "simple" and "obvious".

I think I had to set this up manually a couple of hours after the 12 year old left. I recall entering passwords etc. Ring 150 and ask them to talk you through it.

Well, I've just tried that, and made all the neighbours throw up. But it still isn't working.Scurra wrote:I can only think that you forgot to sacrifice the chicken after dancing round the pentacle six times widdershins in the nude.

Yes, I can see it, click on it, ask it to connect, put the number in and then it won't do anything and says "unable to connect, please contact your network administrator". But when I put the lead in it works perfectly. The signal strength thingy is full.

Sounds like it needs all sorts of passwords.

Stupid thing to say but have you switched everything off (including the router) and tried re- booting and starting again?

Ours has about 5 different codes / passwrds that it asks for at different times. It is very confusing to know which one to put in when.

OK obviously the dancing naked widdershins actually did the trick. It's suddenly, and inexplicably, started working without the cable. All I can say is WTF?? Don't you just LOVE technology???

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
I'm suffering from my precious Netbook suddenly deciding to die on me a few days ago
.
I was in the middle of downloading something from a memory stick (definitely from a safe source - not off the internet) when everything just went blank and the whole thing stopped. No lights, no nothing.... I was with Scurra at the time and even with all his expertise he was totally mystified as to what could have happened. So as soon as I got home I took it into the repair shop and am now waiting to hear the verdict. It's less that two years old, so shouldn't be giving up the ghost yet
At least I have another computer at home - but it is so handy to be able to carry the netbook around with me and I use it quite a lot.

I know I'm out of touch with technology, but I still like cables. You can see them - you can replace one with another to test if the cabel or connector is at fault - you can SEE what's happening. With wireless technology you've got to trust that the sender is sending and the receiver is receiving and nothing odd is happening in between.Bunnylump wrote:It's suddenly, and inexplicably, started working without the cable. Glad you're sorted.
I've still got use of the borrowed eee-pc notebook but really need to get a laptop for use in the living room. My main problem is a serious lack of money, so I suspect I'll be on the 'refurbished' market. Anyone got a tame supplier they could point me to, or any advice on the sorts of (stupidly large) memory/storage numbers I should be looking for?

I may be speaking out of turn here, but didn't you have a spare laptop you wanted to sell, Scurra?

Unfortunately, it looks as if I will have to make a bid for that one, as my netbook seems as if it has indeed died.....

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Wulf - it's less than 2 years old isn't it? If so, you should complain to the manufacturer - it's not 'fit for purpose'. Your 'Statutory Rights' mean that you should be provided with something that's fit for the purpose it has been sold for - if it's lasted less than 2 years, that's insufficient.
You should get a replacement.
(says me, who still hasn't complained to Dell about all the problems I've had with my laptop...)

Well, I can strongly recommend the "being on the phone making a complaint, totally losing it, but instead of shouting AT the person on the end of the phone, tell them you need to speak to your husband (who is in the loo) and then leave the phone within earshot and shout abuse about the 342498726079(&^(^(%%*(%* useless company" method.
That yielded SPECTACULAR results...

Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Can anyone think of a film that has no music, that you thought would be better if it had music?
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
I'm trying to think of a film without any music.
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
No, quite honestly. Don't ALL films have music? Is this for some bizarre music assignment? We took the music off Pingu at school once and tried to work out what was going on and it was SO hard!
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
There are quite a lot of films (particularly in the horror genre) that have no music, but K is writing an essay and has said why it works well that some films have some music, but was hoping to find examples where they would be better if they had had music.
Re: Clever s*ds - help required please!!
Oh, I don't do horror. The scariest thing I've ever seen is Harry Potter.
