 D's name does mean "World chief" which always makes me laugh. He tells me I am "ridiculing his heritage" (he is joking, BTW) because I am making him wear a home-made kilt. I presented him with a giant safety pin today. He said "what do you want me to do with that? Pin my willy up so that it doesn't hang out of the bottom?"

  Tempting, I must say.

Well, if it was good enough for Prince Albert...

Now then - we all know that wild haggis roam the highlands and live on grouse, cleggs and midges - no vegetarian diets for them

Goodness knows, Laura. You show me a thread that HASN'T been deviated into some kind of nonsense!
One of my friends brought a really nice tart for pudding last night, which had pine nuts and figs in it. I'll try to get the recipe and post that here if I can.

My friend bought me a book called "A book of old tarts" for my birthday.

Question of the day. I have a triple birthday weekend this weekend. 8, 33 & 80.

I wanted to buy crushed ice because it was easier than bashing cubes with a rolling pin and I've got enough to do already. I asked the fishmonger in Waitrose if they sold it (because they use it for display). He was happy to give me some f.o.c if I wanted it for display purposes. He wouldn't give me it when I said it was for cocktails.

Apparently its not fit for consumption. Why on earth do they have fish laid out on it then? :o

I suppose you cook the fish, so it doesn't have to meet the same high standards as drinking water.

yes, and most people would surely wash fish before cooking it in any case? Especially if you are planning on eating the skin. I'd wash it and I don't eat the skin!

Has anyone ever used mahonia berries in cooking? I've found jam recipes but I'm just not sure. I have a bush laden with berries.
Problem is, I didn't plant the bush. I think a passing bird dropped a deposit with seeds in it and the bush sprouted from there.

I've never tried them Gill, nor have I heard of anyone who eats them...I'd be interested to hear what you find out!!

I meant to say - this is not a recipe, but just something which was a nice twist for a super easy pudding. I got meringue nests, then stirred some lemon curd into some crème fraiche (sounds disgusting, but actually is really yummy) then put sliced strawberries and raspberries on the top. Yum, and a bit more tart and zingy than cream. :D
