Thank you all! I've had the little ones staying over, so we started with Birthday Breakfast, then went to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park for the day, and have just had Birthday Tea (Roo composed a special Party Tea song on the piano for us) complete with Mary Berry Easter Lemon Pavlova as birthday cake.

Laura - how did the cake turn out? The one K made tasted yummy but she did have trouble making the nest shapes.

BTW I just looked at your age. Better make the most of this year...

The age thing is fine - this time next year I will be at Sheffield arena watching Miranda Hart. The tickets are already booked. I'm looking forward to turning 30 if only for that!!

The cake was lovely. We had no problem with the nests (I say we; my mum made it all and she's very good!), just couldn't find a plate big enough to put the blooming thing on. There's now a quarter of it left and that's taking up a whole dinner plate in the fridge!!!

Is lemon a traditional easter thing, or is it because of the colour yellow being associated with daffodils and chicks and things? The supermarket were selling off all the lemon flavoured cakes last week, for silly prices despite them still having 3 weeks left on their sell by dates.

I think it is probably just that this is the season for citrus fruits - so lemons are traditionally readily available, especially in the Mediterranean region.
The other thing is the way the people seem to have rediscovered lemon drizzle cake, which has suddenly made lemon flavour all the rage. I originally got the lemon cake recipe (with a lovely crunchy topping) from my mother-in-law around 40 years ago after she had it passed on by a friend, but never came across it anywhere else at that time.

The cake Laura had for her birthday has lovely crystallised lemon peel on it. That was the best bit. :D

Belated happy birthday Laura. That cake looks yummy.

I make orange drizzle cake regularly.
