I've just asked OH (who is qualified as a tree surgeon). He suggests felling it and then chipping in small quantities at different times.

The last two days my emails have been weird. My inbox is receiving and sending emails, but I can't get into the deleted folder, or the sent one or anything except the inbox. When I try I get a message saying "Your network connection is unavailable. Please reconnect and try again." What does that mean? I have tried logging out of my emails and back in. I have tried logging out of my computer completely and logging back in. I also sometimes get a message saying that if the problem persists I should contact my helpdesk with HTTP status code 0. Does that indicate the problem isn't at my end but at the internet company?

I wish they made these things easier to understand. I am supposed to be able to receive emails on my kindle, but I can't get it to work.

I'd really need to know more about the email service. Do you log in using a web page to see your emails online? Or do you use Windows Live mail or Outlook (whatever version) or some other email client software? Who is your email provider?

I can't be sure, but I'm going to guess you use a web browser to log into your emails on a web page, and that it's a configuration issue, either at the ISP or perhaps a Windows update has changed some of the settings on your computer and perhaps if in Internet Explorer you need to set the view to "compatability mode" for your email page.

It says Microsoft office 365 at the top, but it also says Outlook, and it's bt internet. This is what I don't understand. Why is it three different things.

Because there are different ways of doing things, just like there are different office buildings where people work, to get to work they can travel by car, bus, train, bicycle, tram, etc. Some of these methods use the same infrastructure (roads) and others differ (railway).

In this case, it sounds very much like the only thing you can do is report it to your service provider. (Your car is OK, the road is OK, but the office building has been infested with wimberts and they're stopping the people from sorting the post.)

Thank you. That makes sense. :D I know you tried to sort me out before, but it all seems to be unnecessarily jargony and I'm easily confused.

OK - I'm here with a request this time.

I've got a job application form downloaded as a PDF file. Is there an easy way to get this into something I can fill in on the computer - such as a conversion to a Word document or some other devious means?

I have a couple of off the wall ideas of making it work, but why re-invent the wheel if there is a correct way of doing it?

Obviously with my lousy hand writing I'd rather type into the boxes and have it readable.

Failing that, I may have some options if you send me the pdf. Can't be certain what access I will have to what choices and when, as things are at the moment though, I'm headed to Leeds for work

LOL - Don't you just love a moving target? I went on to recapture the PDF today and find it's been turned into a .DOC file... sounds like a solution. Until you try to open it or save it and it's an HTML file that shows the Word formatting rubbish.

Feel free to have a look at what I'm looking at, and if a good document can be extracted then pass it my way.

Ah.
Download it. Rename it from Application_form_Warden.htm to Application_form_Warden.doc and it should open in MS Word as a proper word document. It's just the file having been renamed wrongly that's your problem there. (Although yes, it would create a messy html source code file but that's not relevant in this case really)

Nice one :) That's obviously the aptitude test. [Asking friends counts as aptitdue]

Got a saved file to play with - now need the careers advice person to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot with a couple of tricky questions.

Good luck! What a fascinating and interesting challenge of a job.
I also had a recent experience of not being able to fill in a form on-line, which is so frustrating - so those tips about how to deal with that are most useful.

maybe not *that* useful...
Those tips will only deal with the specific situation MBH faced. Adding text boxes to a pdf file might possibly be an overlapping case, but it can't be generally assumed that the site owners simply saved a document with the wrong file type extension

Yes, I see that - but it could still come in useful in similar situation.

What I need now is a sewing machine guru, please. I'm threading this machine according to the instructions, my problem is that the flipping thread keeps breaking (or possibly just coming unthreaded from the needle. So every other bunting triangle, the blessed thing needs to be rethreaded. Anyone got any ideas what I am doing wrong, please? I never used to have this problem with the 70 year old Frister and Rossman!!!

I know nothing about electric machines but when my old Singer did something similar to me I eventually discovered I had missed one stage of the threading process. (there are about 9 stages I think!) Stupid really because at the time I was using it fairly regularly and thought I was threading it very carefully.
But as I say, this was an ancient machine and I know nothing about electric ones except that they scare me - but are good exercise - the one time I used one I would keep having to get up to fetch what I was sewing from where it had shot to on the other side of the table!

Is it threaded right underneath too? Also can you adjust the tension. Mine has a wheel you turn above the bit with the needle. Also could be wrong type of needle or thread for the fabric. If all else fails sew slowly and pull a bit of three loose of the bobbin to keep tension. From getting too tight. Is the bobbin on the right way round?
