It was particularly annoying because the next junction on the motorway is about 200yds away. So close that the on slip from one junction becomes the off slip for the next, but the diversion took me miles out of my way, and in the end I gave up on the diversion because I knew where I was and it was pointing in completely the wrong direction. I think I could have taken a short cut down a country lane, but late at night in the dark I didn't want to get completely lost.

Mm yesterday I went from home to Thornton Heath, to Dartford, to Watford and back home. Left Watford at 4:20 pm and got home at 7:15 pm. Stupid M25 and Dartford tolls.

I keep telling Dad he should go and live somewhere that isn't connected by the M25. Thing is, it's FINE (and dandy) when it's fine and dandy. When it's not, it's HORRIFIC.

Just been talking to my son for an hour.
This may not sound that exciting but it is the first time I have spoken to him for over 11 weeks. He is currently in Lima.
It was so lovely to see him looking well - and a bit browner than he was when he left in March.

How lovely to have finally caught up with him! Funnily enough I saw my boy just yesterday, although he's a lot easier to catch as he's in London! We had a nice meal in the Cochin http://thecochin.net/(we did have a where to eat thread somewhere but I can't find it.) Anyway, it's Keralan cuisine, which has very interesting spice blends, uses lots of fish and vegetarian dishes. Definitely a recommendation if anyone happens to be in the area, and very reasonable too.

Went for a nice walk today, well, I say nice, but it was REALLY muddy. So I've been slipping and sliding along, so what should have been a short 6 mile walk probably was 6 miles sideways as well...

Wow, that is a long time to be out of touch! Does that mean you were able to see him directly via phone? Or did you use Skype? You must be so relieved to have heard from him.....

What a terrific challenge to go to a totally different part of the world - there must be so much to see and learn.

Oh this was Skype. We have had emails from him but he hasn't managed to Skype until now. Mainly because he was travelling with a friend and it's fairly antisocial to want to spend time in an internet cafe when you are with others. But his friend is back in the UK now and he spotted an internet cafe with Skype yesterday so we agreed (by email) a time to chat.
He is hoping to do so again but not for a while as he will be heading down the Amazon for a few days shortly. So I imagine he will be completely incommunicado for a while during his time on the boat.

I gather his Spanish is improving a lot. He did it until As level at school but then gave up and hasn't spoken it since but it's coming back to him and he is managing to chat to people a bit which is good.

He was wearing a T-shirt that says "Life is too short to learn German"

....not today , but on Friday last week I was at my mother in law's flat and she gets the Daily Mail. There was a puzzle of a type I had never seen before. It was a sort of wheel and the words you had to put in boxes on the wheels either rhymed with, had one letter different from, or had the same meaning ( I think) as the words they were connected to. I was quite enjoying it, and would like to do some more. Does anyone know what I am talking about ? I think it was called something like Gyrolet, or Zygolec or something odd like that.

My nephew is the one in the grey jumper with his back to the camera in the pizza photo, and also dangling from a rope in front of a Sno-Cat type vehicle on the search and rescue picture. And in case you are wondering why they were abseiling out of windows it was a fire drill!

I know the sort of puzzle you are talking about, although not the specific implementation here (which has to be done in a particular way so that they can copyright the format and trademark the name. ) In passing I would note that I try to stay away from "rhyming" puzzles for exactly that reason...
