So back to my question, am I looking for 16 groups of 4 from the original words or are some groups larger and some smaller? ie might I have eg a set of 3 words and another with five? I had assumed I needed to divide the words into 16 sets of 4 but in the light of what has been said above I am now wondering whether it is more complicated than that.

No, they are all groups of four in the grid (so you are looking for sixteen groups of 4.)
It's just that figuring out the word to go in the "final" grid is sometimes a property of the group and sometimes what might be another member of that group. But it's usually pretty obvious which is needed in each case.
He says, not having actually solved the puzzle yet.

Oh, sorry, misunderstood what you were asking. Yes, you are looking for 16 groups of 4 from the original words. I was referring to the "what's the missing word from this set" ones - so, for example, if you had found touch, taste, smell and hearing, then the answer for that would be SIGHT. Whereas if it was one of the "normal" style connections, e.g. say you found chester, mans, hat and wake then the connection would be FIELD.
You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

Oh and...
for the second grid, the answer enumeration in alpha order is:
5,4,6,6

Thanks both of you!

I shall persevere. I have 6 possible groups so far, still quite a long way to go!

I will confess that this is not one of my best! It was the first time I had made a connections puzzle. I think I may need to add more to the puzzle to make it more accessible - will have a look this evening!

I also need to add to the final answer part "Who is the final MUSICAL connection."

Anyway, the Jester has managed to slog his way through to an answer! So well done Scurra! 😀

It's really worth giving this one a real go. There are some lovely a-ha moments.

Gosh, well done Scurra!

We are going away for a few days so I may not manage much progress this coming week but will be back.

OK so I have had a little rethink on some of these, and have made an alternative version of the puzzle with some of the more contentious ones changed. Boxes which have changed are in lower case. One of the weird "missing thing in set" groups has now gone. I don't know if this is actually any easier (who knows? )

The puzzle is solvable as it was so you can ignore this if you like. Or you can just forget about the May puzzle altogether and await the June offering!

I wasn't expecting Bunnylump's puzzle to still be going.
But here's my contribution for the month. It's a straight-forward crossword. Honest, it is. :)

OK, there are a couple of numbering errors in my crossword. Sorry about that. They shouldn't get in the way too much.

I have also been coming back to this from time to time but not making a great deal of progress. The revised version is interesting but mainly serves to confirm some of the ones I thought I already had!
