Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I personally think the ancient Egyptians playing animal bones sounds a lot more interesting that all the 'normal' music history. Composers... dates....blah....symphony number....blah....blah....
BORING!!!!

My thought too. I look forward to the puzzle Scurra (if it exists?)Scurra wrote:Thank goodness I wasn't the only person who thought that when I first saw Bunny's post.
Although it did remind me that I needed to finish that G&S puzzle off. [Oh, what a giveaway.]

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I'd personally prefer a G & T puzzle.
I nearly suggested another one with two initials and an & in the middle but then I remembered it's a family forum.

Are we talking about what Scurra is when he sets the puzzles and what we are to attempt to solve them?

Sense and Sensibility, for my book club. Have really enjoyed other Jane Austen, but can't get into this at all.
Shame, as I was looking forward to it.
Edit: I even managed to get the title wrong. It's actually Mansfield Park

Try reading a synopsis first. There are loads to be found on the net.

Yes, I sort of know what happens (not a lot) but I'm just finding it hard going. Not nearly so "accessible" as Emma, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.
Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I did Mansfield Park for A level. Fanny is so wet you just want to slap her, but I think the story is ok. My favourite one is Northanger Abbey, partly because I get the impression JA wasn't taking it too seriously. I haven't read any of them for years, perhaps it's time I reread them.

Well, don't start with this one!
I did Northanger Abbey for A level. So much for A levels getting easier!!

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I was supposed to have studied about 6 books for my A level English. At the time I was far more interested in sex, drugs and rock and roll, so consequently only actually managed to read 3 of them. I still managed to pass though!!

Dunno. What have you got to offer??
(Mind you I don't know much about music. It's all the rest of them that do that.) I know nothing whatsoever about G & S.

I'm quite good at dancing
- but then again so are you!! - not sure I'm in time though for G&S songs(or are they operas???). Come to think of it - not sure I have much to offer.....
Re: I'm Busy Reading....
And all I know about Gilbert and Sullivan is that I HATE it!!!! Especially Pirates of Penzance after having it forced upon me as the school play last year. I won't be much help I don't think!!!

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
I'm on the other side of this one - I learned about G&S after meeting my wife - she was in various societies, and I saw a few shows in my first couple of years with her. I find the music quite melodic, and the lyrics can be clever and/or cheeky (which is why he didn't become a 'Sir' - annoyed too many people with his words).
Since I like London and the tube system, and I'm getting nowhere with the current mag, I think it's all irrelevant anyway
Why am I suddenly thinking of Scurra as a man with a little list????

Re: I'm Busy Reading....
Well, I had to study some Gilbert and Sullivan for my degree. I have found that, in general, if I was made to study it, I both hate it, and know nothing about it. The stuff that I didn't study, I enjoy and can remember things about.
